The “Skinny” on Liposuction and Fat Redistribution- Myth or Fact?
What is liposuction?
Liposuction is a most commonly a surgical technique that removes fat and fat cells mechanically by the use of cannulas attached to vacuum suction. Liposuction techniques are specifically used for improving those trouble areas on the body that fat accumulates regardless of exercise and diet. Liposuction is not used for weight loss or to remove excess or loose skin, it should be used for contouring areas where disproportionate areas of fat accumulate.
Are non-invasive techniques equivalent to surgical liposuction?
Non- invasive techniques for fat removal exist but are often reserved for small areas of fat distribution or for patients who are looking for less recovery time. These noninvasive treatments often use thermal manipulation or fat targeting chemicals to remove the fat. These procedures often require multiple treatments, results are less predictable, and can be cost prohibitive to achieve the results wanted. Most Board Certified plastic surgeons like Dr. Melissa Crosby, would say that these techniques do not work as well for larger areas of fat distribution and the results are often difficult to predict. Surgical liposuction has the advantage of a more controlled removal of fat in by allowing the surgeon to adjust the removal and provide the best contour with direct visualization and immediate results with one treatment and recovery.
Can fat be redistributed in areas that I get liposuction or does it go to other areas?
Liposuction removes fat cells and fat in an area of the body. That does not mean all fat cells in this area have been removed but fat cells that are removed will not regenerate or come back. Think of a fat cell as a balloon that can change in size based on the amount of fat it holds. So, if a patient gains weight after liposuction that balloon can expand and areas of the body that have more of the balloons will expand which as well may give the impression that fat has redistributed. This is why it is important for patients to try and maintain their weight after liposuction procedures.
